West Fork Kadunce Campsite
May 22, 2017
When life hands you a meeting in Grand Marais, it only makes sense to camp at West Fork Kadunce. Fun fact: there’s literally nowhere within the campsite where you can’t see the latrine.
Crow Creek Campsite
July 1, 2016 – with Elliott, Randy, and Nancy
I offer to haul out thru-hikers’ garbage — it feels odd to be the one on a short adventure.
Kimball Creek Campsite
July 4, 2005
I hear no fireworks; only the creek.
Cliff Creek Campsite
June 22, 2008
I wanted to revisit Kimball Creek but I pushed on to Cliff Creek, only to get stuck in a deluge on my way. Sometimes you should dream smaller and not get stuck in a downpour.
Durfee Creek Campsite
July 2, 2016 – with Elliott, Randy, and Nancy
I’m pretending that I don’t know these three people who carried a caldera with them.
Woods Creek Campsite
September 30, 2016
My night here is utterly unnoteworthy; mostly I just smile about the time Elliott and his family took a nap here after hiking 2.5 miles.
East Devil Track Campsite
May 31, 2018
After several tries, I finally score a tent pad at East Devil Track. It’s raining and I don’t meet my co-camper until the morning; she is celebrating her (40th?) birthday by taking a week to hike the SHT solo while her husband watches the kids. Earlier in the year he took a week to celebrate his birthday by going west. I learn a week later that this woman is a highly-regarded political figure in the Twin Cities.

2008: I’ve had The Sound of Music songs stuck in my head ever since Otter Lake Road, and I kind of want to fling myself into the river to make it end. This is one of the first times I ever shared my campsite; happily the young man has a CD player with him and shares some Pink Floyd in an attempt to get Fraulein Maria out of my head.
North Bally Creek Campsite
August 6, 2016 – with Braveheart
Mostly I think about the time I hiked this section of trail 20 times in a day, shuttling wood into a project site. I’m happy to be in 2016 and not 2008.
South Bally Creek Campsite
June 24, 2008
There is a tent with no one inside it, at least I don’t think anyone is in it. I sleep next to my knife because I’m creeped out.
Sundling Creek Campsite
August 4, 2017
I’m on the verge of learning great things in Grand Marais this weekend, but my first challenge was finding the parking lot, which I drove past without seeing. Eventually I figured it out. I’m glad, because Gayle was right – this campsite is so grassy and nice.
North Cascade River Campsite
July 7, 2017 – with Bovee
This place is hopping — a Friday in midsummer, what else is to be expected? I’m utterly perplexed by the labyrinth of trails and vow to come back and fully explore. Of course, to date I have not.
